About SWC

Sapphic Writers Circle is a welcoming and encouraging community for sapphic writers based in Austin, TX. Our free weekly meetings create a low-key environment to talk about writing, share creative encouragement, and build meaningful friendships.

We aim to create a safe and inclusive space for all those who identify as sapphic, regardless of their specific gender identity or sexual orientation.

Writers at every stage of their craft, from those just starting out to those with published work, are welcome at Sapphic Writers Circle. We have poets, novelists, essayists, screenwriters, and celebrate all forms of creative expression!

What to Expect

No one likes being the new person in a room, so we want you to feel welcome from the start. Every meeting starts with a short round of intros: name, pronouns, and what type of writing you enjoy. We are all here to build community, and every person who walks in the door helps us do that.

After intros, the main activity follows a different format depending on which Saturday of the month it is.

FAQ

Do I need to RSVP?

Nope! Just show up :) We’ll be there!

Is it okay if I come alone?

You’re not alone, you’ll have us ;) but yes, totally fine!

What if I’m [shy/awkward/quiet/neurodivergent/etc]?

Welcome to the club lol.

Do I have to introduce myself?

Yes please! But you can come prepared! We always ask:

  • your name
  • your preferred pronouns
  • what writing project you’re working on OR what kinds of things you like to write
I’m not currently working on a writing project! Can I still come?

YES! You have the soul of a writer, whether or not you’re writing. Most of us cycle through phases of writing/not writing. It's totally normal!

I write [insert genre here]. Is this group for me?

Yes, we welcome all genres of writing: poetry, short stories, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, essays, journal/diary, memoirs, non-fiction, screenplays, blogs, really long text messages to your besties, love letters you’ll never send. Did I already mention about having the soul of a writer?

Do I have to share my work?

Meetings are more about community building than reading each other's work. When work is shared (via Discord, peer workshops, or in the zine) it is always optional.

How many people usually attend?

Usually between 6-10 sapphic writers.

What if I have more questions that aren’t listed in your incredibly thorough FAQ?

DM me on IG :)

I’m nervous.

The best way to make friends is usually the scariest. It means you’re doing something right!
